Fiduciary Duty Country Roadmaps
The roadmaps set out recommendations to fully embed the consideration of Environmental, Social and Governance factors in the fiduciary duties of investors across nine capital markets: Australia, Brazil (Portuguese and English), Canada (French and English), China (Chinese and English), Germany (German and English), Japan (Japanese and English), South Africa, UK, and US. Underlying the roadmaps is the understanding that ESG integration is less a product than it is part of the broader process and technology of investment analysis.
The roadmaps build on the analysis set out in Fiduciary Duty in the 21st Century published in September 2015 and draws on over 30 interviews in each country with asset owners, investment managers, industry service providers and academics. It provides commentary on recent developments in fiduciary duty and sets out the business case for ESG integration. The roadmaps address fiduciary training, corporate reporting, asset owner interaction with service providers, legal guidance, the development of investment strategies, ESG disclosure and governance structures. The roadmap also sets out suggestions for institutional investor best-practice.
Research has also been extended to six Asian markets and the programme has engaged with European Commission High Level Expert Group) on Sustainable Finance to help formulate recommendations on EU-wide clarification of investor duties in the European Union.
Updates on each country are available in the Fiduciary Duty in the 21st Century Progress Report, which reflects on the changing landscape of fiduciary duty across the globe, relays a historical timeline of action, and defines priorities ahead.
For an overview of the on-going progress to implement global policy reform to clarify investors' and asset managers' duties based on the roadmap recommendations, view the project slide deck here.
